Sciatica Treatments

Sciatica is a painful condition and if you have been feeling it, don’t delay getting sciatica pain relief. Dr. MaryAnne Del Negro offers chiropractic care at her Garwood, NJ, chiropractic clinic. Her full-service practice offers a variety of treatments that can provide the relief you require.

What is sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in your body. It runs from your spine down to the bottom of your feet. When it gets irritated, it can cause a variety of sensations from numbness and tingling to weakness and pain. The sensations can be located at almost any point on its length. When it gets bad, it can really disrupt your ability to perform the normal daily activities of your life.

What causes sciatica?

In a great many cases, there is no obvious cause. But it may be the result of a herniated disc, spinal stenosis which is usually age-related, pregnancy, or a traumatic injury. The best way to treat the pain will depend on the reason for the pain.

Spinal manipulation

When your spine is out of alignment or a spinal disc is bulging and compressing a nerve root, your entire body doesn't function as well as it should. Getting the spine adjusted can take the pressure off of the nerves and relieve pain.

Electrical stimulation therapies

Several different electrical stimulation therapies are offered that can all help reduce inflammation. The amount of current that is used is dependent on the cause of the pain and the severity of the pain. While this therapy isn't right for everyone, it may be right for you. Ask your doctor if she thinks you could benefit.

Cold laser therapy

Research has proven that cold laser therapy can improve the regenerative process in nerves. This includes the nerves in the back that result in sciatic pain.  The laser is a small hand handheld device that the doctor applies to the afflicted area.

Other treatments

Sciatica pain relief may be had in a variety of other ways. For some people, hot and cold compresses can provide relief. It may be that stretching and exercise can help to relieve the pressure on the nerves and strengthen the back muscles enough to reduce the risk of back injuries in the future.

For sciatica pain relief, Dr. Del Negro treats the entire body to get to the root of your pain. For an appointment at her Garwood practice, call 908-789-2303 to get an evaluation and treatment.
